Objective  •   Executive Summary

Objective:
The objectives of Graduate Intensive Scheme (GIS) as listed in the GIS brochure include the enhancement of the employability of at least 50,000 unemployed graduates in the 36 States of the Federation and in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by improving their skills base through internship programs in pre-selected firms and organizations; provision of a safety net and income supplement for unemployed graduates; reduction of the vulnerability of unemployed graduates; and building of manpower base towards attaining national development options. Other specific objectives highlighted during the sensitization workshop include, the improvement of job placement options by providing opportunity to acquire professional skills and work experience, and creation of opportunity for interns to express potentials and add value to place of attachment.

Executive Summary:
Geomatics Nigeria Limited (GNL) had been contracted by the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Program (SURE-P), Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS) of the Federal Ministry of Finance to undertake the conduct of State Level Sensitization and Mobilization of Firms/Organizations into the GIS in the south western states including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Ondo States. The project requires that GNL identifies a number of vibrant firms and organizations in these States that could successfully mentor graduates for a period of one year at no cost to the firms/organizations. The firms and organizations are to be invited to a one-day sensitization workshop, also organized by GNL. A final report is then prepared to document the different tasks performed under the contract and present the database of firms so far identified as well as those that attended the workshop.

In January 2012, Government decided to partially discontinue payment of oil subsidy on petroleum products. In order to mitigate the impact of the subsidy discontinuation policy on the poor and the vulnerable, Government set up Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P). The program has two main components: • Infrastructure Development Projects; and • Social Safety Net (SSN).

The GIS is a part of the SSN interventions. It is an internship program for unemployed Nigerian graduates aged between 18 and 40 years, where they are provided temporary employment in firms/organizations/state owned enterprises for one year, during which they acquire work experience and skills in order to improve their employability.
